Breast Cancer Awareness Month 2004

Breast Cancer:
New Thinking & New Therapies

WABC-TV, SATURDAY, OCTOBER 6th, 7:30-8PM

This WABC-TV Special highlights progress made in breast imaging & diagnosis, along with changes in surgical treatment. Several profiles of young survivors give us a sense of the change in thinking about breast cancer.

The Special describes the new guidelines on the use of MRI's that have improved the odds of catching a cancer early. New breast sparing surgical techniques are helping women preserve a more normal look and delivering radiation during surgery is another novel approach with a high success rate. The special also features a new study of some concern which shows that there is a sizable percentage of patients that are non-compliant & not taking the prescribed treatment, thus putting themselves at a greater risk for recurrence.

The American Cancer Society continues to investigate the decline in the rate of mammographies and we feature the new Hope Lodge about to open in New York City. It will provide free housing and facilities to survivors and their families.

Experts featured include Doctors and researchers from Memorial
Sloan-Kettering, American Cancer Society, St. Luke's - Roosevelt
Comprehensive Breast Center, Beth Israel Medical Center Comprehensive Breast Service, & Murray Hill Radiology. Some of the survivors featured are Kris Carr, Author & Film-maker, "Crazy Sexy Cancer", Marisa Acocella Machetto, Author & activist "Cancer Vixen" and Jacqueline Lou Skaggs, Founder, "Rebel 1 in 8".
